“Pioneers of Contemporary Glass”

Dale Chihuly blows

Harvey Littleton is the guy who took glassmaking out of the factory and brought it into the studio — he’s considered the founder of the studio glass movement. And his work is one of the highlights of “Pioneers of Contemporary Glass: Highlights from the Barbara and Dennis DuBois Collection”at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Littleton started out studying physics before he switched to art, but his early fascination with the subject manifests itself in the rings, arcs and bands of color in his glasswork.

Dale Chihuly, one of the most well-known — and well-marketed — names in art glass, also has work in the show. One of the early champions of studio glass, Chihuly interestingly uses legions of workers to crank out glass at an astounding rate, pretty much transforming his studio into a factory. Less widely known but stunning work in the show ranges from the delicate and complex glass boxes of Japanese artist Fujita Kyohei to dynamic geometric cast glass by the Czech husband-and-wife duo Stanislav Libensk and Jaroslava Brychtová.
