Sandy Ewen, Wols, Dogebbi

Signal to Noise magazine and Sound Exchange present this evening of experimental music, drawing from divergent styles to spotlight a variety of ways in which pop music becomes high art, and featuring three women with strong musical personalities. Guitarist Sandy Ewen's main project is Austin's Weird Weeds, a mellow, quirky band that uses the accessible, emotionally rich harmonic vocabulary of indie rock in fractured songs influenced by free jazz and creative improvisation. WW's third album, I Miss This, was one of the best to come out of Austin last year. Ewen, an architecture student, began playing out with the band when she was only 18. Wols is centered around young guitarist Amye McCarther, with rotating contributions from other local musicians, including Mlee Suprean of Hearts of Animals and omnipresent side man Will Adams. McCarther's intimate recordings alternate minimally arranged bedroom-pop with long, spare improvisations and loops. Classically trained flutist Michelle Yom performs intense, virtuosic solo improvisations, and has ventured into crunchy electroacoustic experimentation as well. She performs here as Doggebbi, with Spike the Percussionist, who among other wild things has provided music for CoRE suspension art. (Google it — you won't be sorry, we promise.)
