A Poetic Response to Marlene Dumas

Writer Sasha West explores a painter’s verse-atility

What rhymes with art? We’re hoping the writers at A Poetic Response to Marlene Dumas have more mature responses than ours. Sasha West, a poet and former managing editor of Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts, has selected a handful of local wordsmiths whose musings share themes with the featured painter. Dumas’s midlife career is currently featured in The Menil Collection’s exhibit “Measuring Your Own Grave.” Dumas utilizes the human body in her drawings and paintings to explore life, death, violence, sexuality and cultural identity. See how West and company poetically embody these ideas at 7 p.m. 1515 Sul Ross. For information, call 713-525-9400 or visit www.menil.org. Free.
