At the opening of Borderline, Anna Pigeon is having a bit of a rough patch. She’s on leave from her job at the National Park Service with post-traumatic stress disorder (a wolf study went horribly wrong last year — don’t ask) and isn’t sure she’ll be allowed back even after her symptoms subside. The only thing that’s going right is her marriage with new husband Paul. The couple head to Big Bend for a little rest and sunshine, but since this is a Nevada Barr novel, you know that it isn’t going to last long. It doesn’t. During a raft trip down the Rio Grande, the two find a nearly dead pregnant woman caught between two boulders. Goodbye rest and sunshine, hello mystery and intrigue.
