David Ray Vance and Anna Journey

Brazos Bookstore hosts a poet who likes to play doctor

Poet David Ray Vance is a fan of Gray’s Anatomy. (We’re talking Henry Gray.) In his poems, such as “Further Notes on Legerdemain,” Vance plays with optometry and wordsmith-ery in clever and insightful ways. “The pupil as muscle must be exercised,” he writes. And: “As I write, floaters swim in and out of the -periphery.”

Vance earned his doctorate from the University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program and currently has a teaching gig at the University of Texas — San Antonio. But we can’t help but wonder why a love for medical science and ability to make it through seven years of school didn’t compel him to become a doctor; it’s much better pay. Just sayin’…Vance reads with UH creative writing student Anna Journey at 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-523-0701 or visit www.brazosbookstore.com. Free.
