Houston Grand Opera: Brief Encounter

André Previn’s newest work makes its world premiere

The story starts in a train station, that most romantic of spaces, where possibilities seem infinite. Laura Jesson and Alec Harvey, a 1930s British housewife and doctor, already married to other people, meet by chance and fall deeply in love. André Previn’s Brief Encounter, the operatic version of Noël Coward’s film of the same name, is a poignant and bittersweet story. These lovers can honor their feelings for each other or honor their vows to their spouses. Either choice is filled with pain and heartache. Brief Encounter makes its world premiere here with the Houston Grand Opera, featuring Elizabeth Futral as Laura and Nathan Gunn as Alec. 7:30 p.m. May 1, 5, 7 and 9, and 2 p.m. May 3. Wortham Center, 500 Texas. For information, call 713-228-6737 or visit www.houston-grand-opera.org. $25 to $225.
Fri., May 1, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., May 3, 2 p.m.; Tue., May 5, 7:30 p.m.; Thu., May 7, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., May 9, 7:30 p.m., 2009
