Deirdre ShawThe first time novelist makes an old story new againBy Olivia Flores AlvarezPublished on May 06, 2009 at 1:42amWriter Deirdre Shaws Love or Something Like It: A Novel has been called piercingly insightful, graceful and razor-sharp. Thats heady praise for a first novel, especially for a first novel thats mostly concerned with the too-familiar story of a thirtysomething woman finding her way through an emotional minefield filled with divorce, horrible bosses and illicit affairs. Its ground thats been extremely well covered. Shaw puts her own spin on the story, of course. The woman at the center of Love or Something Like Itmarries a stand-up comic, has a brother who is like a house burning down and has an affair with her egomaniacal boss. (Oh yeah, that always turns out well.) Like her protagonist, Shaw has written for television. Were hoping thats where the similarities end. See Shaw today at 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet.
