Deirdre Shaw

The first time novelist makes an old story new again

Writer Deirdre Shaw’s Love or Something Like It: A Novel has been called “piercingly insightful,” “graceful” and “razor-sharp.” That’s heady praise for a first novel, especially for a first novel that’s mostly concerned with the too-familiar story of a thirtysomething woman finding her way through an emotional minefield filled with divorce, horrible bosses and illicit affairs. It’s ground that’s been extremely well covered. Shaw puts her own spin on the story, of course. The woman at the center of Love or Something Like Itmarries a stand-up comic, has a brother who is “like a house burning down” and has an affair with her egomaniacal boss. (Oh yeah, that always turns out well.) Like her protagonist, Shaw has written for television. We’re hoping that’s where the similarities end.
