Houston Indie Book Festival

Literary event showcases underground authors, publishers, bookstores and more

The Houston Indie Book Festivalis your once-a-year, one-stop-shop for all things local, literary and underground. The event brings together independent publishers, organizations, journals, bookstores and, of course, writers and readers. Organizer Sean Bishop says the hardest part about organizing the event was “trying to decide what qualifies as ‘indie.’”

The festival features more than 30 vendors from literary outlets like Inprint, Nuestra Palabra, Effing Press, Gulf Coast Magazine, NanoFictionand Kaboom Books and includes raffles and readings on the hour from local writers such as David MacLean, Hayan Charara and Glenn Shaheen. “We all sort of interact with one another throughout the year,” Bishop says, “but there is no real event that brings us all together to say, ‘Look, we are sort of the literary identity of Houston.’” 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
