“No Zoning: Artists Engage Houston”

Web exclusive!

Admit it, Houston looks like UPS just dropped it off. A tangle of residential, industrial and commercial properties (all next door to each other), the city’s lack of zoning laws has made for an anything-goes feel to most neighborhoods. “No Zoning: Artists Engage Houston,”the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s latest exhibit, includes work by local artists “working in the urban environment.” Translation: The fact that they live and work in areas where 1920s bungalows, new office towers and factories share the same street has crept into their work. There are almost 20 artists participating in the exhibit, including Rick Lowe, who has created billboards that reflect Third Ward, and The Art Guys (Jack Massing and Michael Galbreth), who will perform a ritual that includes marrying a tree. Other artists include The Fundred Dollar Bill Project, Ben Tecumseh DeSoto and George Hixson. There’s a 7 p.m. opening reception today. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through October 4. 5216 Montrose.
