Om Shanti Om

This Bollywood comedy needs no translation

You’re sure to lose count of the Bollywood stars that appear in comedy Om Shanti Om(there are more than 40), but don’t let all those famous faces distract you from the story at hand. It’s the 1970s, and Om (Shahrukh Khan) is a bit player in India’s film industry, but he dreams of being a big star. During filming, he falls in love with Shanti (Deepika Padukone), a well-known actress. Tragically, Om dies while trying to rescue her during a suspicious on-set accident (read: murder). Fast-forward to today, and Om has been reincarnated into O.K., a popular young movie star who slowly recovers Om’s memories about Shanti’s death and sets out to avenge her with startling results. The 2007 film, which puts comedy, romance, action and drama together with outstanding song and dance numbers, is shown in Hindi with English subtitles, but the riotious romp needs no translation. 6 p.m. Saturday, 5 p.m. Sunday. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7515 or visit www.mfah.org/films. $6 to $7.
Sat., May 30, 6 p.m.; Sun., May 31, 5 p.m., 2009
