Gallery Sonja Roesch presents the Dutch artist in his Houston debut

Ariane Roesch, assistant gallery director for Gallery Sonja Roesch, says visitors should expect to be surprised at the "Jan van der Ploeg"exhibit, the first-ever Houston show by the Dutch artist. It's a very striking composition, with lots of color, she says of the show's centerpiece, the wall-size mural Wall Painting 265. "We focus on reductive and conceptual art, and this definitely is very conceptually driven," says Roesch. "He thinks about how the space and the color, the shape and design work within the architecture. It's really about interacting with the space." The mural is made up of four thick lines set at an angle, covering one end of the gallery. "It's very minimal," Roesch admits, "but I think the color and the form really hold the space, and I think people [will be] drawn toward it." The exhibit also includes smaller canvases by van der Ploeg. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through July 4. 2309 Caroline.
