J.J. Grey & Mofro

Not one write-up about proud Floridians J.J. Grey and his backing band Mofro fails to mention how their music is a stew of Southern soul, swamp-rock and blues – including, apparently, this one. (Dammit!) Although that's a completely accurate description, Mofro definitely branches out a bit on its fourth and most recent release, Orange Blossoms. There's more sultry, sexy-fried tunes ("She Don't Know the Truth," "Move It On"), rock ("Higher You Climb") and even...a near-disco number, "On Fire." (?!?) And while Grey's deep, commanding voice could use a bit more variance, this collection of 12 tracks (11 originals) should help break the talented singer/guitarist out of the Southern clubs straight through to Bonnaroo Nation. Or at least its sideburns-sporting contingent.
