Nancy Pelosiscored a victory for women in 2007 when she became the first female Speaker of the House. Yes, her wealth and political connections helped, but you don’t become second in line for the presidency without formidable intelligence and ambition, no matter your gender. And, as an archetypal California Dem, what could be a better job perk than raining shards of glass ceiling onto George Bush? You can hear Pelosi discuss her groundbreaking career, the challenges facing America and the importance of young women entering politics when she appears as a guest of the Progressive Forum, Houston. Madam Speaker will engage in a candid — as candid as these things get, at least — conversation with PFH president Randall Morton. (You can suggest questions for Pelosi online prior to the lecture.) As a bonus, attendees will receive a complimentary copy of her book, Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters. (If they’re giving it away for free, it must be good.) Wortham Center, Brown Theater, 501 Texas. For information, call 713-664-0020 or visit www.progressiveforumhouston.org. $19 to $144.
