Michael de La Cerda: "Three Hundred Sixty Five"

The artist known for his circles gets an angle on fatherhood

Last year, sculptor Michael de La Cerda's exhibit at the McMurtrey Gallery was named "three sixty," after the number of degrees his circular shapes covered. This year, his follow-up exhibit is called "Three Sixty Five," referring not to degrees, but to the number of days he's spent with his newborn son. "It's the second show he's had with us, so it kind of continues the ideas he started with the first one, but being a new father has shifted the work a bit. He still uses a lot of circles, but now there are some rectangles as well," says Liz Ashabranner, assistant director for the gallery. "The show covers all the emotions that go with being a new dad." (The baby, whom de La Cerda and his partner adopted, celebrated his first birthday as the "Three Sixty Five" exhibit was being hung.) The works include All Boy, made up of rectangles placed in a jumble, the pieces at odd angles to each other, and Red Ball, a ring of different-size circles. 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
