Houston’s Indian Community celebrates Rabindranath Tagore

Calcutta-born Rabindranath Tagore was an educator, composer, social activist, poet and entrepreneur — not to mention a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, all before he died in 1941. He’s become, of course, a great source of pride for Indians and Bengalis in particular, evident in this weekend’s Barnali 2009, the second annual Tagore Fest. During the two-day celebration, revelers can enjoy performances by international artists such as singer Rezwana Chowdhury Banya and dancer Jhinook Mukherjee, as well as locals Rathna Kumar and the Anjali School of Dance. There’s also a food fest, and a gallery featuring local artisans. 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday. Houston Durga Bari Society, 13944 Schiller Road.
