Slow Poisoner is by no means a typical solo artist. The San Francisco-based one-man outfit mixes every possible style and condenses it into a part rockabilly, part alt-country, part avant-garde endeavor. Somehow, in the midst of this genre identity crisis, he manages to keep a firm sound. The initial tracks on Poisoner's latest album, Magic Casket, might drive you a little insane, but stick it out. Gradually, his voice becomes less annoying, and by the end of the album even sounds good. If "Thundering Fists O' the Lord" doesn't change your mind, then, honestly, nothing will. Slow Poisoner's minimalist approach is not meant for the ill-prepared musician — which, thankfully, he isn't.
