Saturday Night Fever

Web exclusive!

According to Saturday Night Fever, New York in 1977 was a more innocent place, a place where enough hairspray and some fancy dance moves made you a king. The film features a young John Travolta as a hottie with a thick Brooklyn accent and a talent for dancing. Donna Pescow is the not-nearly-pretty-enough girl he dumps for the unattainable Karen Lynn Gorney. On the positive side, Travolta's character, who gives true love, shiny shoes and a pounding disco beat all equal attention, is convoluted enough to keep your interest, and the soundtrack by the Bee Gees holds up. On the negative side, the members of Travolta's entourage seem like cavemen (surely none of those pickup lines ever worked). Recent reports that American Idol's Simon Cowell is planning a Saturday Night Fever remake with Zac Efron in Travolta's role and Timbaland taking over the Bee Gees' duties should send SNFfans running back to the theater to see the original before the remake comes out. 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Alamo Drafthouse, 531 South Mason Road. For information, call 281-492-6900 or visit www.drafthouse.com/mason. $7.
