It doesn't seem like a decade since Doug Sahm left us. The Westside San Antonio native and musical/literal Texas Tornado was the State Musician of Texas long before the Legislature ever created such a position. Sir Doug, felled by a heart attack in November 1999, has remained with us because he knew and influenced just about every musician in Austin — and beyond; this year's Keep Your Soul tribute featuring Dave Alvin, Greg Dulli, Alejandro Escovedo and Delbert McClinton (among others) is one of the albums of the year, hands down — but none more so than sons Shandon and Shawn. While Shawn fronts the aptly named Tex-Mex Experience, Shandon spends most of his time as a shirtless, platform-heeled Austin glam-rocker who works plenty of his old man's music into his set. A former member of the Meat Puppets, Austin near-misses Pariah and his dad's reconstituted Sir Douglas Quintet, Shandon is a gifted musician and dynamic front man in his own right. Friday, he takes it a step further than usual with an all-Doug set, adapting Sir Doug's unique Tex-Mex country soul to his own psych-y hard-rock stylings rather than hiding in his father's formidable shadow. Your move, Shawn.
