Kiki Melendez's Hot Tamales Live

From hissing vaginas to Benetton-style interracial families, these comedians don't hold back

The comedians of Kiki Melendez's Hot Tamales Livetackle a variety of subjects, including the earnest assimilation of new immigrants ("My father's name is Tony — it's short for Mohammad"), older women dating much, much younger men ("I don't care, I'm willing to go to jail behind your ass"), and delusions of grandeur ("I'm going to flush myself down the toilet — because I'm the shit, baby, oh yeah!"). Comprised of half a dozen stand-up comics, Hot Tamales Live was conceived by comedian Kiki Melendez and actor Eva Longoria as a female response to the all-male, all-white lineups at most comedy clubs. "But we don't do any male bashing, and we don't make fun of other races," Melendez is quick to point out. "Instead, we look at ourselves and all the crazy things that we have in common. Everybody has a weird family, everybody is bad at relationships, everybody walks around trying to be cool and usually not getting there." Today's comics include Nadine Rajabi, Kira Soltanovich and Houston's own Thea Vidale. 7 p.m. House of Blues, 1204 Caroline. For information, call 800-745-3000 or visit www.kikikiss.com. $20 to $25.
