Last Easter

Four friends, one diagnosis of cancer - it's not what you think

Any play that works Irving Berlin, the incomparable Baroque painter Caravaggio and Judy Garland all into the plot needs to be seen. Such is the case with prolific English playwright Bryony Lavery's Last Easter. Presented by Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company, the show follows lighting designer June, who comments and directs the lighting throughout. She's been diagnosed with incurable cancer, and her professional friends will do their damndest to keep her out of the doldrums, going on a road trip to Lourdes in hopes of saving her, and later, at June's request, helping her die. The chipper crew includes drag performer Gash, who likes to quote movie lines to keep reality at bay; impressionable puppet designer Leah; and bitchy alcoholic actress Joy. 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays. Through August 15. Gremillion Art Gallery, 2501 Sunset. For information, call 832-418-0585 or visit www.mildredsumbrella.com. Pay-what-you-like to $10.
Mondays, Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 30. Continues through Aug. 15, 2009
