In Hanan Peled’s richly evocative world, the past is never truly in the past, nor is it ever easily forgotten. As the final movie of the Jewish Community Center’s Summer Israeli Film Series, Peled’s uplifting and bittersweet post-WWII family drama Dear Mr. Waldman makes the strongest case possible for the newly resurgent Israeli movie industry. When his father, who mistakenly believes that his eldest son didn’t die at Auschwitz but holds an important job in the Kennedy administration, writes him a letter, youngest son Hilik (played by the marvelously expressive Ido Port) forges a response in hopes that his father will be happy. What Hilik assumes will be a good deed, almost costs him his family.
