Given the band's all-too-familiar name construction of color + exotic animal, it would be all too easy to mistake White Rhino for indie-rockers whose jeans are too tight and songs are too loose. That impression would last about one second once the Austin-via-Houston trio smacked you upside the eardrums with its metal- and R&B-tinged hard (hard!) rock. Obviously wearing out the needle on albums by their snaggle-toothed '70s forebears like Motörhead, Thin Lizzy and the MC5, White Rhino can occasionally veer off into spacier, proggier territory à la Hawkwind, thrash it out like Master of Puppets-era Metallica or turn on the bluesy afterburners like some anabolic descendent of ZZ Top. A power trio in the truest sense of the term, White Rhino should more than hold its own Friday against H-town heavyweights Whorehound and the Trian Woodburns.
