"Perspectives 167: Jason Villegas"

These aren't your standard stuffed animals

Houston-born artist Jason Villegas loves stuffed animals. But the plush toys of "Perspectives 167: Jason Villegas" are not the warm and fuzzy cuddlers from your childhood - his are toothed, bloodied and come with warning labels. Most are sexy in a dark, deconstructed sort of way, as Villegas mines his subconscious and creates his own myths around our materialistic world using sculpture, performance, video and wall-size murals. The crude style and handmade look of his work mocks our increasingly voracious culture of consumption and the destructive nature of capitalism. Commenting on a recent San Francisco show, Villegas explained, sort of, "This primordial sea of frenetic mutation...pits the images and icons of high and low consumer cultures in the same ring. I want the viewer to become consumed within the relentless devouring, multiplying and destructive nature." Got that, wasteful consumer?
