Houston’s Finest

Houston indie-poppers take it outside

The accolades for Spain Colored Orange keep stacking up - most recently, the band took home Best Indie Rock band in the 2009 Houston Press Music Awards. (Not bad, considering other nominees in the category included promising upstarts the Tontons and Wild Moccasins.) In this case, though, "indie" is a more frustratingly broad term than usual. Spain Colored Orange is hard to fence in to a specific genre; the band features trumpet, slide whistle and a layered sound that recalls some of the better '70s mainstream rock. If ELO and Yes sound like fine, upstanding influences, you'll want to hear what SCO is about. Grab your beach towel or folding chair and head to Discovery Green at 3 p.m. 1500 McKinney.
