Night of the Giant

Mildred's Umbrella keeps it eccentric in its latest production

You know you're in for a real treat when the guy in charge of the show you're about to see gets advice from the BDSM enthusiasts in the Women in Power Society. John Harvey, the writer and director of Night of the Giant, the newest offering from Mildred's Umbrella, brought in WIP dominatrices to teach the cast how to tie the knots used in the play. He calls his story a black comedy, but "obsidian" is probably a better description of the darkness at the heart of this spooky clan. Harvey says the story follows "two sisters who take care of their father at home by tying him up, hooding him and making him remember." As for comedy, when asked what funny things happen in the play, Harvey's voice drips with irony: "A ham sandwich is made. The father drinks from a dog bowl. Lightbulbs are washed and dried by a daughter." See strange and stranger get together for an evening of the absurdly original theater on which Mildred's Umbrella has built its reputation. 8 p.m. September 23 to 26 at Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex, 2201 Preston. 8 p.m. October 2 to 3 at Ovations, 2536 Times. Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m.; Oct. 2-3, 8 p.m. Starts: Sept. 24. Continues through Sept. 26, 2009
