Seven's Heaven

Ensemble Theatre draws on an American icon for its latest production

Forget the Astros - look to the Ensemble Theatre's production of Seven Guitars for a guaranteed home run. Whenever Ensemble produces any part of August Wilson's monumental ten-play Century Cycle, you can count on a winning evening at the theater. Set in the late '40s in Wilson's beloved Pittsburgh, Guitarsshowcases the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright at his most Chekhovian. His conflicted and very human characters scheme to get to Chicago, where they think their dreams will come true. Music has much to do with their desires, and Wilson's poetic rhythms and rich cadences are like a beautiful score in their own right. Although this drama is squarely in the middle of the play cycle, it's easily accessible even to those unfamiliar with Wilson's stories of the black experience. Wilson is one of America's most fascinating stage writers - go and experience his great universal truth. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through October 18. 3535 Main. For information, call 713-520-0055 or visit www.ensemblehouston.org. $18 to $35.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 19. Continues through Oct. 18, 2009
