First Thursdays at Dean's: Miguel Alvarez

The Austin-based filmmaker screens a trio of shorts

Give Miguel Alvarez a few minutes, and he'll give you a feature-length film's worth of feeling. The writer and director will screen two of his outstanding short films and a work in progress for today's First Thursdays at Dean's event. In Kid(12 minutes), the UT grad student tells the story of a sensitive 13-year-old whose father coerces him into undertaking a violent rite of passage. Tadpoles(eight minutes) deals with a similar loss of innocence, but here the trauma sets up a more cynical conclusion. And Alvarez's work in progress, Mnemosyne Rising (18 minutes), will be screening in public for the first time. If he can pack an emotional wallop into an eight-minute film, imagine what he can do with an extra ten minutes. 9 p.m. 316 Main.
