"Texas Masters Series: Rachelle Thiewes"

It's an attack of the accessories

Jewelry artist Rachelle Thiewes has said that her creations are "designed to engage and challenge the wearer, making them an active participant; an initiator of sounds and body rhythms." Jewelry that challenges you? This might bring to mind too-tight chokers or ten-pound bangles. But for Thiewes, it translates to bright, cylindrical bracelets and earrings made from steel and auto paint, flowing necklaces made from silver metal discs, and massive brooches with blade-like attachments that aren't meant to hurt, but rather to dangle alongside the body and move as it moves. See her work at the new "Texas Masters Series: Rachelle Thiewes" exhibit. (Some of her designs might intimidate, but remember that the word "fierce" has lately become a very serious compliment.) There is an opening reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on October 2 and a gallery talk with Thiewes at 2 p.m. on October 3. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through December 24. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, 4848 Main. For information, call 713-529-4848 or visit www.crafthouston.org. Free.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 2. Continues through Dec. 24, 2009
