Keith Carter: "Unseen & Rediscovered"

I get by with a little help from...the Hubble Space Telescope

For cultural institutions, fall is the time to bring out the artillery, and Art League Houston's big gun is photographer Keith Carter, one of Texas's most prolific and renowned artists. In "Unseen & Rediscovered,"an exhibition of photographs by the 2009 Texas Artist of the Year, the Art League presents a host of never-before-exhibited works ranging across Carter's career, from early studies of his Texas/Louisiana border home turf to recent images in which he combines his own ocular images with those taken by the Hubble Space Telescope - a project he embarked on when he lost the vision in his left eye to cancer. Celebrity portraits abut dreamy black-and-whites; pensive nudes are next to frolicking dogs. Carter has both the artistic prowess and commercial appeal to become a legend; in the eyes of many, he already is. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through October 30. 1953 Montrose. For information, call 713-523-9530 or visit www.artleaguehouston.org. Free.
