2009 International Quilt Festival/Houston

The world's largest show of fabric arts comes to town

Quilts have become fine art; stop by the 2009 International Quilt Festival/Houstonand you'll see what we mean. These aren't puffed-up blankets. Instead the fabric art, which uses everything from glass beads to thread-painting to digitalized embroidery, looks as if it would be at home in a museum or gallery. Featuring names like Moonlight, How to Be Plaid in a Striped World and After the Ice Storm, the quilts range in style from impressionistic to abstract to amazingly realistic. This is the largest annual quilt show/sale/school in the world. In addition to the 2,000 quilts on display, there are almost 450 hands-on workshops and special events, and some 1,000 merchant booths offering books and supplies. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For information, call 713-781-6864 or visit www.quilts.com. $10 to $35.
Oct. 15-18, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2009
