"22nd Annual Día de los Muertos"

Celebrate the dead at Lawndale Art Center

Lawndale Art Center's "22nd Annual Día de los Muertos"marks one of the most spectacular holidays of the year in Houston. Among the engaging aspects of the Mexican remembrance of loved ones is the retablotradition of creating devotional paintings to honor the dead. In August, Lawndale Arts Center passed out 300 pieces of sheet metal to artists so they could create their own updated take on the retablos for this open-call exhibit. Christine West, the executive director of Lawndale, says that the retablos in the exhibit, which come from both "nationally known artists and people in the neighborhood," promise to be "lively, fun, colorful and compelling." A variety of associated programming is scheduled for the month, including a gala and a family fiesta. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through November 7. 4912 Main. For information, call 713-528-5858 or visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org. Free.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 19. Continues through Nov. 7, 2009
