“Inbound: Houston”

Wait, was that a Hornitos ad?

Billboards: Love them or hate them, they are an inescapable reality of life in Houston. And while they can sometimes be less than artful (see the Do You Suffer from Excessive Sweating? campaign), odds are, you at least glance at them. You’ll be taking a second look during the run of “Inbound: Houston,” a public art project for which artist Karyn Olivier will replace billboard advertisements with images of what’s directly behind the boards, whether it’s blue sky, bushes or just more road, for more than a dozen billboards across town. The point, Olivier stated when launching the project, is both to “reengage commuters with their surroundings” and “notice and pay attention once again to what’s being ‘advertised.’” Head to DiverseWorks to meet Olivier and check out the billboards (not the real ones, street level photos of them) at today’s launch party from 6 to 8 p.m. 1117 East Freeway.
