The Devil’s Backbone

A group of orphaned boys battle greed, ghosts and war

Director Guillermo del Toro gives viewers a ghostly look at the last days of the Spanish Civil War in The Devil’s Backbone. Set in a gloomy wreck of an isolated orphanage, the film chronicles the fate of a group of boys and the doctor tasked with keeping them safe. A larcenous assistant, the ghost of a murdered boy, and ever-nearing battles threaten what little security the doctor has managed to create. Watch for the heartbreaking scene in which the doctor, wounded and dying, sets himself up as a solitary watch guard, the last defense between the chaotic world around them and the boys he’s determined to protect. 11:55 p.m. Friday and Saturday. River Oaks Theatre, 2009 West Gray. For information, call 713-866-8881 or visit www.landmarktheatres.com. $9.
