According to Hal Niedzviecki’s book The Peep Diaries: How We're Learning to Love Watching Ourselves and Our Neighbors, "Peep culture is reality TV, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, MySpace and Facebook." All of these seemingly innocent ways of sharing with our cyber "friends" have changed the world, and not necessarily for the better. As he notes in his book about our new Internet world order, “In December of 2008, the editors of Webster's New World Dictionary and Thesaurus chose the verb 'overshare' as their word of the year." None of these worries seems to have stopped Niedzviecki, who blogs and tweets about his life and is working on a documentary film called The Peep Project. If the voyeur in you is interested, Niedzviecki will be happy to show off in person today when he meets and greets young adult fans as part of the 37th Annual Jewish Books & Arts Fair. Schmooze over drinks and then meet the writer of the nonfiction book Oprah chose as one of her "25 Books You Can't Put Down." 6:30 p.m. Jewish Community Center, 5601 South Braeswood. For information, call 713-729-3200 or visit www.jcc-houston.org. $15 (includes copy of the book). Attendance is limited to 21-to-35-year-olds.
Tue., Nov. 3, 6:30 p.m., 2009
