Itzhak Perlman

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto gets a workout by one of classical music's best

Even if you've never stepped inside a symphony hall, chances are you've heard Itzhak Perlman. The violin virtuoso performed on the soundtracks of The Color Purple, Scent of a Woman and Schindler's List, among many others. (He even played on Barbra Streisand's Yentl, but we'll let that slide.) Jazz lovers have heard him, too, on the 1994 release Side by Side, a collaboration with pianist Oscar Peterson. Perlman joins the Houston Symphony today for a classical performance that includes Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, Elgar's Enigma Variations and Berlioz's Overture to Béatrice et Bénédict. 7:30 p.m. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-224-7575 or visit www.houstonsymphony.org. $45 to $115.
Wed., Nov. 4, 7:30 p.m., 2009
