"International Discoveries II"Foto Fest has global visionBy BLAKE WHITAKERPublished on November 04, 2009 at 1:40amJust in case you haven't had time to globe-trot between prestigious international photography events lately, FotoFest is bringing some of the world's best to you in "International Discoveries II." The exhibit, which features nine photographers from four continents, required FotoFest curatorial staff to travel to photo reviews and biennials (work, work, work!) in search of new talent. The result is a diverse show that emphasizes each artist's unique vision. The portraits of Vee Speers (France and Australia) feature children whose ages are belied by their jaded, almost predatory expressions. A similar feeling of alienation is present in the Polaroids of Mimi Youn (United Kingdom and Korea), though the execution - figures and cryptic messages scratched into the pictures - is worlds apart. And there are seven more sets of distinct contributions. Opening reception is 6 to 9 p.m. November 5. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through December 19. 1113 Vine Street. For information, call 713-223-5522 or visit www.fotofest.org. Free.
