The Recycle Club

Two generations of dancers make what's old new again

Karen Stokes, co-founder of Travesty Dance Group, says The Recycle Club is "an hourlong performance, a swing dance lesson, a party and art installation that all use recycled clothing." She goes on to explain, "Over the last 11 years, I've been doing dance in Houston...[For this show] I've picked out dances, phrases or sequences of movement from a whole bunch of different pieces. So we are literally recycling material from our past. But it's not like we're just revisiting them. We're completely remixing them with new staging and new costumes; everything in terms of the lighting and music will be new." There's even "recycled dancers." Stokes's mother, Roberta Stokes, had a dance company here in the '80s. She'll be performing a duet with Farrell Dyde. Audience members are invited to donate clothing for the performance just before show time (dancers will pick their costumes from the pile of cast-offs). 8 p.m. Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, 2201 Preston. For information, call 832-794-5825 or visit www.travestydancegroup.org. $35.
Sat., Nov. 7, 8 p.m., 2009
