The Classical Theatre Company starts this season's Douglas Earle Johnston Reading Series with a staged reading of Prometheus Bound. CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston recounts the storyline for us: "It's based on the Greek myth of Prometheus, who is a Titan...He sided with the humans to protect them from Zeus, even giving them fire, which was a gift only the gods were supposed to have. Zeus discovered this and subsequently chained Prometheus to a rock. Every day an eagle flies down and eats out Prometheus's liver. But because he's a god, it always grows back, so he's tortured for all time. The play is essentially the first day Prometheus is chained to the rock and the reasons for it. He discusses why, knowing what would happen, he did what he did anyway." Johnston says the tale, written by Aeschylus, conjures up ideas of standing up to tyranny even in the face of personal danger, which is a message that still resonates today. 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet.
