"The Growth Experiment"

Melanie Schlossberg's paintings give plant life some fresh CO2

Melanie Schlossberg literally drew her subjects from the ground up for "The Growth Experiment." "I begin with a young plant and continue to paint the same plant as it grows over days and months, adding new phases of its growth to the original depiction," says the artist in an e-mail. She captures each phase in a different color, making grasses, leaves, stems and buds flourish as greens, purples, yellows, reds and more and breathing life into their mundane, domestic houseplant existence. Schlossberg has long loved personified plants. "I have an early inspiration of listening to the entire [Little Shop of Horrors] soundtrack one Saturday. So the line between plants and [animals] is thin for me," she says. There's an opening reception 5 to 8 p.m. November 14. Regular viewing hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Through November 30. Darke Gallery, 5321 Feagan. For information, call 713-542-3802 or visit www.darkegallery.com. Free.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 14. Continues through Nov. 30, 2009
