"Hasta La Basura Se Separa [artcrush]"

Box 13 ArtSpace exhibits some beautiful trash

The 13 artists of "Hasta La Basura Se Separa [artcrush]" are in the business of resurrection. For the sculpture-centric exhibit, they've transformed mostly found or recycled objects from anonymous detritus into meaningful commentary on object identity and border politics. The show was conceived specifically for exhibition at a historical building in Nuevo Laredo that is slowly recovering from the rampant cartel-related violence that, not five years ago, had municipal police firing on federalessent to restore order in the city. A similar rebirth occurs in Teruko Nimura's cherry blossom-like tree sculpture, a spare and elegant piece that's surprisingly beautiful even if you don't consider the fact that it's made of junk. Hector Hernandez's felled basketball goal is equally striking but thematically distinct; the "blood" spilling out of the severed pole and the upright axe standing over it seem to symbolize the effect unyielding violence has on community life. 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and by appointment. Through December 31. For information, visit www.box13artspace.com. Free.
Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: Nov. 21. Continues through Dec. 31, 2009
