A Decade of Dissent

Voices Breaking Boundaries boasts ten years of speaking up

Voices Breaking Boundaries celebrates ten years of persistent, aesthetically pleasing protest with A Decade of Dissent. "We've been very politically clear where we stand," says VBB founder Sehba Sarwar. "Our shows...have been about immigration, women's rights, border issues [and] war." The local nonprofit began addressing these issues as a literary organization, but expanded to include music, visual arts and theater events. Today, it looks back with a documentary by Faroukh Virani and photographs from Burnell McCray. Sarwar says these works reflect VBB's move from voice to voices. "I think we became much louder after 9/11...A lot of our members, a lot of our community went through a lot of emotional turmoil during that time, and so the organization began tackling issues in a much clearer way." 7 p.m. Houston Institute of Culture, 708-B Telephone Road.
