Now in its sixth year, the Houston Ballet's Jubilee of Dance, a showcase of works new and old, has become a landmark event of the season. But today's installment is a landmark of landmarks, as it will celebrate the company's 40th birthday. Artistic Director Stanton Welch also turned 40 this year — a harmonious coincidence, as the show will highlight the productive symbiosis he's found with his company. But this jubilee is primarily a tribute to Barbara Bears, a principal ballerina retiring after 20 years. While Bears's exit will hurt, the jubilee will demonstrate the strength of the remaining company with the world premiere of Welch's 40, choreographed to showcase all 53 HB dancers. But it's Bears — whom Welch describes as a "remarkable talent" — who should provide the emotional clout of the evening with a performance of The Dying Swan, a century-old heartbreaker. (You might want to bring tissues.) 7:30 p.m. Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas. For information, call 713-227-2787 or visit www.houstonballet.org. $17 to $160.
