Move over, Nutcracker, there's another Christmas ballet in town. The Sandra Organ Dance Company's Amahl and the Night Visitorstells the story of the three kings who go in search of the Christ child, as seen through the eyes of poor shepherd boy Amahl. The boy is "lame, and so it's danced by a dancer on one pointe shoe and a crutch," says Organ. The ballet, choreographed by James Sewell, will be performed to a prerecorded 1951 operatic score created by Gian Carlo Menotti for TV, with the dancers signing the story of the libretto. And because the score was written for television, the whole thing only lasts about 45 minutes - perfect for our holiday season attention spans. 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 801 Bagby. For information, call 713-315-2525 or visit www.thehobbycenter.org. $22 to $42.
Sat., Dec. 19, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 20, 7:30 p.m., 2009
