Elf

No, most elves aren't as clumsy - or as hungry - as Buddy

There are two reasons to see holiday flick Elf: Bob. Newhart. Sure, Will Ferrell is hilarious as the innocent, lovable Buddy the Elf, a human accidentally raised by elves in Santa's North Pole wonderland. And yes, James Caan has some brilliant bits as Buddy's reluctant newfound dad. Even Mary Steenburgen pulls off a few good lines as Buddy's bewildered stepmom who's trying to do the right thing, despite the fact that she can't quite figure out what to do with a six-foot-three stepson dressed head to toe in elf garb. But it's Newhart, as Buddy's adoptive father Papa Elf, who shines in his signature "less is more, let the punch line quietly sneak up on the audience" style. 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Alamo Drafthouse/Mason, 531 South Mason Road, Katy. For information, call 281-398-5454 or visit www.drafthouse.com/mason. $7.
Fri., Dec. 18, 8:30 p.m., 2009
