We're not sure if it's a happily-ever-after ending for Mike Nichols's landmark film The Graduate. First, an aimless Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman in a star-making role) comes home from college, annoyed and uncomfortable with his family's constant pressure to conform to their expectations (read: attend graduate school and date a nice girl). Then he's reluctantly seduced by an older woman (Anne Bancroft as the original cougar Mrs. Robinson), who has a lovely daughter (a young and vulnerable Katharine Ross as Elaine) who also catches Benjamin's eye. By the time Benjamin sorts out his feelings, Mrs. Robinson's been busted by her husband and Elaine's gone off to college and is engaged to another man (one who hasn't slept with her mother). Benjamin bursts in on Elaine's wedding just as the "I do's" are about to be said, hoping to whisk her away, but only if he can duck an extremely angry groom and Elaine's father, Mr. Robinson, who's still pissed Benjamin banged Mrs. R.
