Any New Year's Eve event not involving the usual options of getting drunk and, ah, drunker, could rightfully describe itself as a celebration with class. The Houston Symphony's New Year's Eve Concert, a tasteful and exuberant concert at Cypress Creek FACE, certainly fits the bill. Traditionalists will enjoy works by Strauss and Saint-Sa‘ns, and cinephiles will appreciate excerpts from The Sound of Music and John Williams's hit score from E.T. There's a bit of Christmas left over in the mix in the form of Leroy Anderson and Mitchell Parish's "Sleigh Ride" and Tchaikovsky's "Trepak (Russian Dance)" from The Nutcracker, but for the most part the symphony, led by conductor Brett Mitchell, is focused on simply setting a cheerful tone for 2010. And with the show clocking in at just under two and a half hours, you'll have plenty of time left to...well, explore those libation-involving alternatives. 8 p.m. 6823 Cypresswood Drive, Spring. For information, call 281-440-4850 or visit www.cypresscreekface.org. $30 to $60.
Thu., Dec. 31, 8 p.m., 2009
