Bobbindoctrin's 6th Annual Puppet Festival

Local collective puts together more performances than you could shake a fist at

Bobbindoctrin's 6th Annual Puppet Festival has lots of fist-up-the-rear-end action. (Puppets, people, puppets.) Along with tabletop hand puppetry, the local collective's annual showcase also includes marionettes, shadows and taxidermy. (Yep, that's right, dead animals.) "Some of the films that we're showing are by Wladyslaw Starewicz...this Russian filmmaker from the '20s. He [uses] stuffed frogs and dead bugs," says Bobbindoctrin founder Joel Orr.

Other works include Kevin Taylor's The Man Who Knows Presents: The Beasts of India, the story of the fearless mentalist Mesmo.

This year's most exciting addition comes via the under-undergrad circuit. "This time we actually have some younger artists who are early in high school...doing really exciting work," Orr says. Ciaran Chelloveck and Rachel George's La Ni–a que Fue Golpeada Por Un Rayo: A Day of the Dead Puppet Show, is a table-puppet piece about a young girl who is struck by lightning. 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 4 p.m. Sunday. Midtown Arts Center, 3414 La Branch. For information, call 713-259-1304 or visit www.bobbindoctrin.org. $10.
