"Jonathan Marshall: Double Vision”

Austin’s Art Palace relocates to Houston

Austin transplant Arturo Palacios was putting the finishing touches on the new digs for his gallery, Art Palace, when we called to ask him about the opening show, “Jonathan Marshall: Doubled Vision.” “He’s one of my strongest artists,” Palacios told us. “Just the breadth of his work, the breadth of media he covers.” Marshall’s latest exhibit includes photography, sculpture, painting, drawing and video pieces in which the artist seems to live out his Indiana Jones dreams — including the outfit. It also features a bike boat built (and tested) by Marshall, seen in production stills of video from his previous Austin exhibit, “The Book of Lenny.”

Palacios started Art Palace in Austin in 2005 and represents Houston artists including Elaine Bradford and Seth Alverson. Of his decision to move here after four years in Austin, Palacios said Houston has proven to be a more economical and competitive environment. “It’s time for [my artists] to grow and expand to larger markets,” he said. “And I think Jonathan is primed and ready for that.”

The opening reception runs from 6 to 8 p.m. January 15. Regular viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through March 6. 3913 Main. For information, call 512-496-0687 or visit www.artpalacegallery.com. Free.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: Jan. 15. Continues through March 6, 2010
