Seymour Lipkin

The Beethoven master gives us a night of - duh - Beethoven

Winning the Rachmaninoff Competition at just 19 was an auspicious start to what's been a stellar career for pianist Seymour Lipkin, who makes a rare stop in Houston today. He's enjoyed success in everything from chamber music to the conducting podium, prompting one critic to call him "a boldly incisive, unaffected pianist with...a broad range of styles." He's appeared as a guest soloist with the world's top orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic (where he later became assistant conductor); he's collaborated with the giants of his generation, including Leonard Bernstein; he's toured with such notable peers as the Juilliard String Quartet; and he's served as music director for the Joffrey Ballet, among others. Lipkin is perhaps most recognized for his recent recordings of the complete sonatas of Beethoven and Schubert, so it's no surprise that today's program includes Beethoven's Fantasy in G Minor, Op. 77. 7:30 p.m. The Menil Collection, 1515 Sul Ross. For information, call 713-524-5050 or visit www.dacamera.com. $17.50 to $35.
