A 1939 New York Times review of the play Thunder Rock said the show "bids the world cheer up." Sounds like good advice for the denizens of 2010 - maybe that's why Company OnStage chose the Robert Ardrey script to start off its new year. In the play, the brooding and fed-up character Charleston sequesters himself away on an island in the middle of Lake Michigan with little more than a lighthouse for company. Once there, he starts thinking about a group of immigrants who were shipwrecked on the rocks back in 1849. Somehow the living and the dead end up communicating, and even more impressive, they end up helping each other get over their loss of faith in the world and its people. As we collectively limp into the new year hoping to be able to kiss the recession and all its nastiness goodbye, a story about renewed faith might be just what the economist ordered. 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Through February 20. Company OnStage, 536 Westbury Square. For information, call 713-726-1219 or visit www.companyonstage.org. $15.
